Once, the area was home to many Mayan settlements. In fact, its current name comes from two Mayan words: Cha, meaning small and Kanaab, sea. Today, you can book a visit to the Chankanaab National Park. Open since 1980, this is a conservation area. Be sure to check the rules before you go.
The Park is on the protected East coast of Cozumel. Its sites include a Mayan Ark and the lagoon. While you cannot fish, you can snorkel, scuba dive or swim with the dolphins. You can also lie on the sandy beach, watch your children play in the children's area or swing in a hammock. If you are physically challenged, do not worry. The park has ramps and sand wheel chairs.
