Seventy-five miles east of Merida, the capital of the state of Yucatan, Mexico, sits the sacred city of Itza, called Chichen Itza. This city is the most important of the Maya culture and covers approximately six square miles where hundreds of building once stood. Nowadays, most are just mounds, but about thirty buildings still stand.
Divided into two groups, one group belongs to the classic Maya period built between the seventh and tenth centuries AD at which time, the city was a prominent center for ceremonies. The other group belongs to the Maya-Toltec Period, which happened in the late tenth century to the beginning of the thirteenth century AD. This group includes the Sacred Well and most of the outstanding ruins in the area.
