Cozumel, Mexico History
Originally occupied by the Maya, the cultural makeup of Cozumel quickly changed in the 16th century with the arrival of the Spanish. With the arrival of the Spanish the Maya saw many of the temples destroyed and eventually contracted smallpox, virtually crippling the population. From the 16th century through the late 20th century Cozumel was mostly deserted, save for the occasional pirate and few locals that had been able to maintain.
However, in 1959, legendary diver Jacques Cousteau visited the area, bringing a strong resurgence to the area through his praise of its dive quality.
