On your trip to the tropical paradise of Cozumel, take some time away from lounging at the world-classes beaches and sipping on tropical concoctions poolside to explore the rich history and culture of the island. The largest city in Cozumel is the coastal town of San Miguel, and in this city, you will find one of the most popular structures of the local inhabitants, the Iglesia de San Miguel.
The
Iglesia de San Miguel today is the largest church on the island. With most of the island's inhabitants being of the Catholic faith, this large Catholic church has the largest congregation on the island. The church is located on Avenida Benito Juarez in downtown San Miguel in the corner of the main square. The
Iglesia de San Miguel welcomes visitors to attend its scheduled services, which includes daily mass services. The church has been an institution in the city for several hundred years, and is among the oldest modern structures on the island.
With a visit to the
Iglesia de San Miguel, you will find a picturesque white church with an attractive facade accented by gorgeous stained glass windows. Inside the church on the altar, you can view a famous ivory statue of St Michael the Archangel. The statue was unearthed by farmers digging in a field about 100 years ago. Since the statue was discovered on the day holy day of San Miguel, locals took this as a heavenly sign for both the church and the town. The statue is believed to be a gift from Juan Grijalva who arrived in Cozumel in 1518. Because of this heavenly sign, both the church and the city have been named after St Michael.
