History
The original inhabitants of the area of Cancun, located in the northern part of the state of Quintana Roo, were the Mayan Indians. The Spanish arrived in the area in 1517, and shortly after the Native population of diminished greatly by new diseases and forced labor by the Spanish.
The area of Cancun remained largely rural for many, many years. In 1970, the Mexican government wanted to initiate a plan to boost tourism in Mexico. development of Cancun began on January 23, 1970, at the time the area only had three residents, the caretakers of a coconut plantation, and only 117 people lived nearby the exact area in Puerto Juarez, a fishing village and military base.
To ease the mind of initial investors, the Mexican government funded the first nine hotels. Since then the city has grown tremendously, over the last 30 years, the population has grown to around 600,000, and the tourism has grown as well. Four million visitors come to Cancun every year, making tourism the main industry in the city. Hotels, resorts, condominiums, and time shares line the beaches and streets.
