Isla de Pasion is the ideal destination
for visitors to Cozumel, Mexico who want to travel :off the beaten
path," or simply enjoy the pleasures of a remote tropical island
while avoiding massive crowds of tourists.
Isla de Pasion is an island, situated a
short distance north of Cozumel. One factor contributing to its
inaccessibility is that it's only accessible by boat, yet no
organized tours go there. Thus, merely to set foot on this quiet
island, visitors must hire a boat to take them towards the island
from Cozumel proper.
Once there, the enterprising visitor
will be rewarded with a tropical island nearly empty of humans yet
full of local wildlife. The land of this island is part of a nature
park run by the Mexican government, so there are plenty of
animals--all protected--running around. Despite this, people are
allowed to catch fish off the island. Visitors can can catch and cook
as many fish as they can eat.
Away from the beaches, the island
quickly becomes comprised of forest-covered mountains. It is possible
to hike these mountains, but tiring and difficult. These hikes should
be attempted by visitors prepared to exert themselves, and equipped
with adequate provisions for a day of walking in the tropical heat.
There are a few trails on the island. They go inland, extending from
the North Punta Molas Road.
Visitors have praise the Isla de
Pasion's white sand beaches, which are reputedly among the cleanest
and whitest in Cozumel. Although largely uncrowded, the beaches still
have many of the basic facilities, such as hammocks.
