Chankanaab, which means a small sea, is, in fact, a national archeological park with a salt water lagoon and a botanical garden. The park hosts replicas of a Mayan village and stone carvings of Aztec which are scattered all over the area. The gardens in the park which were devastated by the Hurricane Wilma in 2005 are gradually coming up again. You can walk along cool pathways leading to the sea and enjoy the sight of parrotfish and sergeant majors swimming around the snorkelers in the sea.
Parque Chankanaab is considered to be the best tourist destination in the whole Cozumel area and features fabulous snorkeling and diving on the island. The admission ticket is $10 per person which is fair enough as you can spend the whole live long day snorkeling and diving from 8.a.m. to 5.p.m.
The beach is the best place for children to swim as there are no rocks to harm them. A great attraction of the island is its fabulous dolphins. There is a very large enclosure with a large concentration of dolphins. There is also a wooden walkway above the water where you can watch them frolic around with the swimmers. Be sure to take along your camera to capture the truly memorable time.
If you like you can swim with them. They let you ride on them by holding their fins. They splash water on you, kiss you and even talk with you. The whole scene is caught on a video film by the organizers and of course you have to pay for it to have it.
