San Gervasio in Cozumel, Mexico is an interesting place to visit if you're interested in historical sites and the history of Cozumel. At one time, this place was dedicated to "Ixchel", the Mayan goddess. Today you can still see many statues to Ixchel in the many temples on the island. Ixchel was the goddess of fertility and Mayan women would travel to San Gervasio from all over the country just to pray in the temples and pay homage to Ixchel. San Gervasio is a beautiful place to visit even though there hasn't been much restoration done to the original archaeological site. The Temple of the Hands is a building of much interest to many with its many little red handprints all over the wall. These handprints are of unknown origin or significance, although many believe this may have been a day-care center for moms of pilgrims at one time. San Gervasio is best known for well-preserved structures of the San Gervasio settlement in pre-Hispanic times. Many of these structures date back to 300-600 A.D. Most of these the structures you see were used as shrines and alters or public meeting places for government officials. Many temples are still standing today and are very interesting to see. You'll find that it's more than worth the trip to see this historic site if you're near the area. You can also take part in some of the tours that take place here. Seeing the ruins of San Gervasio is what most tourists find the most interesting.
